Take The Points Team Mull Over World Cup Options
|
USA: Dual Grade 1 winner Take The Points, who was controversially denied a third top-flight victory when disqualified in the Gulfstream Park Turf Handicap on February 6, was on Monday installed a 16-1 chance by Blue Square for the Dubai World Cup on March 27.
Take The Points, who has raced on turf since last summer, was disqualified and placed fifth at Gulfstream Park, although his connections felt the contact with unplaced Yate's Black Cat at the sixteenth pole was minimal and that he was unfortunate to be thrown out.
Blue Square agree, with spokesman Alan Alger saying on Monday: "Our odds compiler who specialises in US racing says he probably wouldn't have been disqualified anywhere except in America, and that he's decent enough to be introduced at 16-1." Andrew Scutts, Racing Post.

On Monday, Throng, by Silver Deputy, will run in the $300,000 General George Breeders Cup Handicap at Laurel Park. Edgar Prado will fly up to Maryland to ride him.

Sleuse Wins Impressively At Gulfstream
|
Sleuse, owned by Starlight Stable in partnership with Don Lucarelli and Paul Saylor, broke his maiden very impressively yesterday at Gulfstream Park. Ridden by Edgar Prado, the imposing Grand Slam colt broke well, pressed the early pace and then effortlessly pulled away at the quarter pole and went on to win by about five lengths. What was even more impressive was that as easy as he won, the time for this race was two ticks of the track record. From this race it would appear that he will be a three year old to watch this year.

Sleuse, a three year old Grand Slam colt is running in the fourth race at Gulfstream Park on Friday, February 1st. Owned by Starlight Stable, Don Lucarelli and Paul Saylor, he will break from the nine hole in this seven furlong maiden special weight event and Edgar Prado will be on board for the ride.
On Sunday the same connections will be represented by Sing Amen in the third race also at Gulfstream. It is a maiden claimer for $62,500 going five furlongs on the dirt. This will be her second start for trainer Steve Margolis. We are hoping that the drop in class, along with the shorter distance and the addition of blinkers that she should be pretty tough in this spot.

Jazz Hall Wins A Thriller At Turfway
|
Jazz Hall (pictured on left at Keeneland), a Starlight Stable homebred by Grand Slam out of the Dixieland Band mare Dixie Maintenance went wire to wire to win a five and one half maiden special weight race in an exciting dead heat at Turfway Park on Wednesday, January 16th. Conditioned by Jeff Thornbury on the polytrack at Keeneland and ridden by John McKee Jazz Hall's win was all the more impressive as he had not run since March of 2007.
Starlight Stable's next runner will probably be on January 25th at Aqueduct when Daguerreotype, who is owned in partnership with Donald Lucarelli and Paul Saylor will attempt to follow up her win at Laurel in a first level allowance race.
Why Tonto is on target for the Hallandale Beach Stakes at Gulfstream on February 16th. Bullara Runs A Strong Second At Gulfstream Park
|
Bullara, (pictured left) a four year old Holy Bull colt, owned by Starlight Stable in partnership with Don Lucarelli and Barbara Kurtin was a fast closing runner up in a second level allowance race at Gulfstream on Sunday 1/13. Under the guidance of Edgar Prado, Bullara saved ground on the rail in the mile turf event but faced with a wall of horses coming off the turn he had to be pulled out in mid stretch and finished strongly just missing the win by a head. He had not run since the end of May last year so this was a huge effort. He will defininitely be one to look out for next time.
Sing Amen, a Songandaprayer three year old filly, owned by Starlight Stable, Don Lucarelli and Paul Saylor made her debut at Gulfstream on Thursday 1/10 in a Florida Bred maiden special weight going seven furlongs. After contesting a hot pace up front the Steve Margolis trainee tired and finished up being no factor. All being well she will run back in the next couple of weeks.
Jazz Hall, a Starlight Stable home bred four year old by Grand Slam will run tomorrow, Wednesday 1/16 in a five and a half furlong maiden special weight event at Turfway Park. Coming off a lay off and training forwardly at Keeneland on the polytrack he will make his first start for Jeff Thornbury. Turfway Park's leading jockey John McKee has the ride.

Throng Wins The Native Dancer Stake At Laurel
|
Throng, a five year old Silver Deputy colt, owned by Starlight Stable in partnership with Don Lucarelli and Paul Saylor went wire to wire to win the $80,000 Native Dancer Stakes at Laurel Park on Saturday, January 5th. Breaking from the five hole under Carlos Marquez Jr. Throng soon took control of the race and ended up drawing away from his nearest opposition by about four lengths. His run in this race earned him a huge 1/2 - (minus) on the ragozin sheets.
Minutes later at Gulfstream Park Keyed Entry made his greatly anticipated return to the races in the Grade III Mr. Prospector Handicap but unfortunately after contesting a hot pace in the slop tired to finish down the field. It had been over six months since he had last start and he is none the worse for his run.
Starlight Stable's next runner will be Sing Amen, a three year old Songandaprayer filly, who will debut in the ninth race on Thursday, January 10th at Gulfstream Park.

Starlight Racing Acquires 19 Outstanding Yearlings
Twelve promising colts and seven exciting fillies have joined the Starlight Racing stable following a highly successful buying campaign at North America’s three most prominent yearling venues.
Some of the world’s most successful bloodlines are represented in the new acquisitions, which were purchased by Starlight principals Jack and Laurie Wolf and Donald and Barbara Lucarelli in consultation with primary advisor Barry Berkelhammer at the Fasig-Tipton Kentucky July, Saratoga and Keeneland September sales. The yearlings have been divided into groups with partnership investment opportunities immediately available.
“This is an exceptional group of yearlings and we have great hopes for future racing victories at the highest level,” said Jack Wolf

Starlight Stables Offering Partnership Opportunities
|
After reaching some of the loftiest pinnacles of Thoroughbred racing in just seven short years, Starlight Stables is opening its doors for a few special partners seeking the ride of a lifetime to join the team.
Stable principals Jack and Laurie Wolf of Louisville and Saratoga Springs, New York, and Donald Lucarelli of Duanesburg, New York, decided before attending the Fasig-Tipton Kentucky July yearling sale in Lexington this week to bring on a small number of investors who also want to reach for the stars.
“We hope to be able to share the unequalled thrill of standing in the winner’s circle with a victorious racehorse and sipping champagne in the directors’ rooms of tracks like Churchill Downs and Belmont Park,” said Jack Wolf. “We aim to buy more horses and thus enhance the chances of winning more prestigious races.”
Yearlings purchased at summer and fall sales by the Wolfs and Lucarelli through bloodstock agent Barry Berkelhammer of Ocala, Florida, will be offered in new partnership opportunities. Three-time Eclipse Award-winning trainer Todd Pletcher will continue to condition the Starlight Stables runners.
“We are following the same guidelines we have used in acquiring and racing such outstanding runners as two-time champion and Breeders’ Cup Distaff winner Ashado and multiple Grade 1 winner Harlan’s Holiday,” Wolf said. “We will welcome new partners who have the desire to win North America’s best races and have fun doing it.”
Starlight purchased nine yearlings at the Fasig-Tipton sale from July 16-17, including colts by More Than Ready, Lion Heart, Red Bullet and Even the Score, and fillies by Broken Vow, Tale of the Cat, Indian Charlie, Friends Lake and Saarland. More horses will be acquired at the Saratoga selected and Keeneland September yearling sales.
Starlight’s record since the Wolfs established the stable in 2000 is unsurpassed. In addition to Ashado, an earner of $3,931,440 while raced in partnership with Johns Martin and Paul Saylor, and Harlan’s Holiday, who finished second in the 2003 Dubai World Cup and earned $3,632,664, Starlight has campaigned Grade 1 winners Octave and Purge and has competed in the Kentucky Derby, Belmont Stakes and several Breeders’ Cup championship races. Stable policy calls for selling runners at the end of their racing careers for breeding, and Ashado was sold to Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid al Maktoum’s Darley at the 2005 Keeneland November breeding stock sale for a world record $9 million. Major Central Kentucky stallion stations Vinery and Airdrie Stud are standing Purge and Harlan’s Holiday for fees of $20,000 and $17,500, respectively.
